How did you become a member of Rotary? Did someone invite you?

Rotary's history is that membership is by invitation only. Although we don't strictly adhere to that code, Rotary is still a relationship organization. And most people want and need a personal invitation in order to feel comfortable joining a group. That's where YOU come in.

Although any meeting is a good meeting to extend an invitation to a guest, of particular interest to potential new members might be the March 30 meeting. March 30 is the meeting we're asking each Rotarian to invite a potential new member to join us for a "lunch and learn" opportunity. Guests can have lunch on us, plus they can learn about the resources provided to business owners by Open to Business and they can check out Farmington Rotary. Everyone wins!

Getting to know Snapchat and more

You know how I told you last week that this week's meeting would be all about getting to know each other? Well, plans have changed. Instead of getting to know each other, tomorrow's March 16 meeting will be all about getting to know Snapchat, the popular app that is all the rage with millennials and lets you easily talk with friends, view live stories from around the world, and explore news in Discover. I have no idea what that means. I just got that description off the Snapchat website.

But our own Jenna Pellicci is convinced that Farmington Rotary, Ramble Jam and YOUR BUSINESS need to be on Snapchat. So she's going to show us how to do it. Come to the meeting and learn how to download the app, set up an account and get started. Learn how to use it to promote your business. Learn how to explore news in Discover, because to me, discover is a verb and I'd like to know how it can be a noun. So should you.

And here is the "more" part. Time permitting, Janie and Corey will lead a discussion about how they use social media to promote their business – and how you can use it too. And you probably have some tips to share too. So don't be shy – tell us what you know! And tell us what you would like to know. Related to social media, of course.

Have you heard about Farmington Journey? This exciting new program provides new opportunities of interest to adults around the age of 50 and older as they continue their journey through life. Farmington Journey's unique purpose is to inspire our midlife and older adult population to enhance and ignite their life experiences, health and happiness as they continue with life’s journey. This time in life can be a time of renewal with energy and purpose. Farmington Journey is an initiative led by Farmington Area Schools Community Education and the Farmington Parks & Recreation’s Rambling River Center. Come learn more at our Rotary meeting on March 23.

March 30 meeting: Open to Business

Starting or growing a business is not easy, and sometimes business owners need business counseling or financing assistance. Where to turn?

Open to Business is a partnership between Farmington, the Dakota County Community Development Agency and the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers to provide free, personal and confidential business consulting services to businesses and entrepreneurs. Laurie Crow, MCCD business adviser, will speak to us on March 30 about how she can help you develop a business plan, identify challenges and opportunities, tailor solutions to meet your business' needs, identify financial needs and apply for financing. It almost sounds too good to be true. But it isn't.

Hospitality is important

Hospitality is an important value for Rotarians. We like to pride ourselves on being welcoming and inclusive, and hosting meetings that are organized and informative. And in a small club, everyone has to pitch in to make this happen.

That's why each Rotarian is assigned to be a meeting host for one month each year. Meeting hosts arrange for speakers for their assigned month, plus they arrive to meetings early for setup and stay after for cleanup. Check the Source each month to see if your turn is approaching. And be sure to reach out to Heidi or Linda if you have questions.
